Last checked 2026-09-22 · Seoul, Seocho-gu · Korean original

If you are looking for a smoking area before taking an express bus, the Express Bus Terminal area has plenty of options. There are open smoking booths on both the Honam Line (Central City) and Gyeongbu Line plazas, and four more are designated around Banpo Shopping Town across the street. There are 9 registered areas within 800 m, all based on the designated smoking area data published by the Seocho-gu Public Health Center. Smoking is completely banned in the terminal waiting halls and boarding areas, so use the plaza booths before departure.

Honam Line (Central City) plaza — the reference booth

This is the open smoking booth on the Honam Line plaza at Central City. It is the easiest area to find around the Express Bus Terminal, so distances on this page are measured from this booth. If you are taking a Honam Line or Yeongdong Line bus, you can step out from the waiting hall to the plaza and use it right away, and a cigarette butt bin is also registered next to the Central City Honam Line entrance, about 200 m away.

Gyeongbu Line side — the drop-off plaza and south of the building

If you are using the Gyeongbu Line terminal, two spots are close. One is the smoking booth on the Gyeongbu Line drop-off plaza, about 310 m northeast, and the other is the outdoor space south of the Gyeongbu Line building, about 230 m southeast. The south outdoor space is not a booth but a spot designated as open, so check the signs. Toward the Gyeongbu Line boarding area, there is a cigarette butt bin in front of Express Bus Terminal Station Exit 3, about 360 m away.

Around Banpo Shopping Town — two booths and one line-type area

Areas are also clustered around Banpo Shopping Town, west and northeast of the terminal: the smoking booth in front of Building 2, about 105 m west; the smoking booth between Buildings 4 and 5, about 180 m northeast; and the line-type area in front of Building 7, about 390 m northeast. A line-type area is marked with lines on the sidewalk, so you must stay inside the lines. If you are coming out of the shopping town or the underground shopping center, these are closer than the terminal plaza.

If you are visiting Seoul St. Mary's Hospital

About 330 m and 420 m southeast, areas are registered behind the Seoul St. Mary's Hospital funeral hall and on its entrance side. Many people stay a long time here for condolence visits or visiting patients, so the hospital has set aside these spots. Smoking is banned inside the hospital buildings and around the main entrance, so use these two. Further south, about 710 m away, there is an area at the Seoul Regional Public Procurement Service.

Where to dispose of cigarette butts

There are 2 cigarette butt bins registered within 800 m of the Express Bus Terminal: next to the Central City Honam Line entrance (about 200 m) and in front of Express Bus Terminal Station Exit 3 (about 360 m). Smoking booths usually have ashtrays inside, so if you used a booth, putting your butt there is the surest option. This site is not meant to encourage smoking; it was made to show both where you can smoke and where to dispose of butts. If people can't find a designated area and smoke on the street, they run into non-smokers, and butts thrown on the ground clog storm drains and worsen flooding or lead to fires and ocean pollution. The location information on this page was collected for the same purpose, so please be sure to put your butts in an ashtray or a bin.

Things to note

Smoking is completely banned in the terminal waiting halls, boarding areas and underground shopping center. If you have a bus to catch, it is safer to go 10–15 minutes before departure to allow time to get to the boarding area. Smoking outside designated areas may be fined up to 100,000 won under the National Health Promotion Act, and littering cigarette butts may carry a 50,000 won fine. Walking routes at the terminal often change due to construction and events, so locations may change.
