Sinchon Smoking Areas — 4 Spots Including the Hyundai Department Store and YBM Rooftops (Map & Road View)

Last checked 2026-09-22 · Seoul, Seodaemun-gu · Korean original

What stands out about the registered smoking areas in Sinchon is that they are clustered on building rooftops rather than on the street. The rooftops of Hyundai Department Store Sinchon, U-PLEX, YBM and the K-Square Sinchon Building are all within 200 m, so if you are shopping or in the middle of classes or office errands, going up the nearest building is the fastest option. It is a university area where street smoking enforcement and complaints are frequent, so it is safer to use the designated rooftop areas.

Hyundai Department Store Sinchon and U-PLEX rooftops — two spots within 200 m

The easiest areas to find in Sinchon are the rooftops of Hyundai Department Store Sinchon and U-PLEX right next to it. The two buildings are about 90 m apart, so it makes little difference which one you enter, and both are registered as open areas. Keep in mind that you can only use them during the department store's opening hours. Take the elevator to the top floor and follow the rooftop signs.

The YBM rooftop and the K-Square Sinchon Building rooftop

The YBM rooftop, about 170 m east, is registered as fully open, meaning it is open on all sides. The K-Square Sinchon Building rooftop, about 190 m west, is an open area. Both are office or academy buildings and may be run mainly for people using the building, so outside visitors should check the information on the 1st floor. All four are rooftops, so use may be limited on rainy or windy days.

A little further — Seodaemun Post Office and the Severance funeral hall

About 630 m northwest there is an area on the 1st, 2nd and 4th floor terraces of Seodaemun Post Office, and about 720 m northeast there is a fully enclosed area on the 1st floor of the Yonsei Severance Hospital funeral hall. A fully enclosed area is closed on all sides and has ventilation, so you can use it regardless of the weather; on rainy days it is the better choice. In the 850 m–1 km range to the east there are also areas outside the 2nd floor of the Yuin Building and outside the 5th floor of the Korea Arts Broadcasting Promotion Institute building.

Where to dispose of cigarette butts

There are no registered cigarette butt bins yet within 700 m of the Sinchon reference point. The rooftop areas usually have ashtrays, so please use them. University areas are busy, which makes butts dropped on the ground especially noticeable. This site is not meant to encourage smoking; it was made to show both where you can smoke and where to dispose of butts. If people can't find a designated area and smoke on the street, they run into non-smokers, and butts thrown on the ground clog storm drains and worsen flooding or lead to fires and ocean pollution. The location information on this page was collected for the same purpose, so please be sure to put your butts in an ashtray or a bin.

Things to note

In the Sinchon area, no-smoking streets and university campus no-smoking zones overlap, so smoking outside designated areas is likely to be subject to enforcement. Under the National Health Promotion Act you may be fined up to 100,000 won, and littering cigarette butts carries a separate 50,000 won fine. All the registered areas are building rooftops, so they are hard to use outside business or operating hours.
